By-product Processes

The three primary byproducts produced in refining—gums, soapstock and fatty acid distillate—can be processed using one of three types of processes, all of which Crown supplies: oil filtration and lecithin drying, soapstock acidulation and fatty acid distillation processes.

Evaporating the moisture from the wet gums under controlled conditions produces food-grade lecithin. Soapstock, a byproduct of the neutralizing process, is sometimes acidulated using heat and acid to separate the oil and fatty acids from water, and fatty acid distillation purifies the deodorizer distillate.
